What if Nature had a seat at the boardroom table? That question sparked a powerful and timely conversation yesterday at our event “Planet Earth – the Missing Board Member”, co-hosted by ESG4Boards and ClimateHack Zurich. The session was overbooked — clear proof that this dialogue is resonating at a critical time.
As biodiversity loss accelerates, planetary boundaries are being breached, and nature-related risks become financially material, boards and executive teams can no longer afford to ignore the voice of Nature.
Nature is no longer a silent externality —
🌱 She is a strategic concern,
🌿 a systemic risk,
🌍 and a wellspring of future value.
Simon Berthoud reminded us that even Switzerland is not safe: Glaciers are melting, and the country has already warmed by 2.9°C. But alongside these alarming facts lie opportunities — nature-positive business models represent a $10 trillion global potential.
Boards can no longer wait. Nature is becoming a regulatory, fiduciary, and strategic priority — whether we’re ready or not.
🧭 What can be done?
Boards can give Nature a voice by expanding the mandate of sustainability committees, creating board seats with a Nature mandate, involving external experts via advisory boards or aligning with the Rights of Nature framework
We also explored the shift from intention to transformation:
➡ Rethinking governance
➡ Embracing science-based tools like TNFD, SBTN, the ACT-D Framework
➡ Making biodiversity core to decision-making
🙏 Heartfelt thanks to
✨ Philipp for his thoughtful moderation
🌟 Helle and Simon for their inspiring contributions
👏 Saskia & Sofia for your seamless organization
💡 and to the ClimateHack Zurich, Impact Hub Zürich, Patagonia and all the natural sponsors for co-hosting with vision and energy.
Nature is not just a stakeholder — she is the foundation of life and long-term value. Let’s give her the voice — and the vote — she deserves.
