How Swiss companies are progressing on nature-related risks and opportunities
In 2025, engageability conducted an in-depth analysis of the implementation of the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) among leading Swiss companies. The study reviewed sustainability, integrated and annual reports from 2024 and assessed 100 leading companies in Switzerland against the TNFD recommendations, complemented by additional parameters to ensure a comprehensive analysis (study period: August–October 2025).

Growing awareness – but most companies are still at an early stage
The results indicate a growing focus on nature-related issues in Switzerland, yet most companies remain in the early phases of TNFD readiness. While 28% of the assessed companies identify broader nature topics as material for their business, 45% classify biodiversity as a priority within their material topics.
- 17 out of 100 companies do not mention nature at all in their reporting.
- 16 out of 100 reports explicitly refer to the TNFD recommendations.
- The majority of companies achieve less than 25% fulfilment of TNFD requirements.
- Only 3 companies reach more than 75% fulfilment and set a benchmark for national nature-related disclosure.
What Swiss companies identify as key nature-related risks
Across sectors, the study finds that companies increasingly recognise nature-related risks linked to:
- Resource use and pressures such as pollution and noise
- Ecosystem services (e.g., pollination, water quality and availability, soil fertility, flood protection)
- Biodiversity protection and impacts driven by land-use change
To broaden the scope beyond biodiversity, the assessment also considered additional nature-related fields such as water use, waste management, resource efficiency, ocean protection, sustainable land use (including reforestation and deforestation), and the circular economy.
Governance remains a major gap
A key finding is that nature-related responsibilities are rarely anchored at the top. Only 11% of companies indicate nature-related responsibilities at board level, underlining a clear need for action: strong governance and board expertise are critical to successfully manage nature-related risks and opportunities.
Momentum for TNFD is growing globally – Switzerland is catching up
Internationally, TNFD adoption continues to accelerate. The study also highlights five Swiss early adopters referenced in the TNFD context: Breitling, Bunge, Holcim, Rhätische Bahn, and UBS.
From assessment to disclosure: a practical path to TNFD readiness
To support companies on their journey, engageability outlines a practical four-phase Nature Readiness approach aligned with TNFD:
- Assess: materiality analysis, risk assessment, identification of impacts and dependencies across the value chain
- Commit: define science-based and SMART targets (e.g., aligned with SBTN), validate through stakeholder engagement
- Transform: develop nature-positive business models, strengthen leadership capabilities, invest in biodiversity-positive projects
- Disclose: strengthen reporting and compliance through TNFD-/TCFD-aligned disclosures and impact analyses
