Tiny Forest

engageability supports organizations in creating Tiny Forests – small, participatory, nature-based forests – from concept to measurable impact.

Stakeholder Engagement

Why Tiny Forests?

Mini forests – based on the “Tiny Forest” concept by Miyawaki – offer companies a powerful way to make their ecological and social engagement visible. They actively contribute to climate protection and biodiversity, strengthen local roots, and foster employee identification with the company’s sustainability goals.
As a participatory project, they create opportunities for team building, environmental education, and sustainability communication with real impact – right on your doorstep.

Our offering

We support you from the very beginning – from site selection and project planning to implementation. We are happy to assist you in involving relevant stakeholders and experts, such as landscaping companies, soil, biodiversity and forestry specialists, as well as local authorities.

Objectives:

  • Assess feasibility
  • Gather and integrate stakeholder interests
  • Establish the foundation for a sustainable project

The planting of the Tiny Forest is designed as a community experience. We organize and facilitate the event, enabling active participation from volunteers, schools, employees, or local residents.

Objectives:

  • Promote environmental education
  • Strengthen community bonds
  • Foster long-term identification with the project

We develop a simple, hands-on concept for monitoring and impact assessment – including recommendations for indicators, methods, and potential implementation partners such as local schools, universities, or environmental organizations.
Note: Monitoring is carried out by external partners.

Objectives:

  • Document the forest’s development
  • Generate learning outcomes
  • Ensure transparency and credibility

We help you showcase the Tiny Forest both internally and externally – through text and visual content, social media inputs, local media outreach, and on-site communication.

Objectives:

  • Create awareness
  • Acknowledge and appreciate participants
  • Communicate impact to the public

Time & Costs

From the initial idea to the planting event, the process typically takes about 6 to 12 months.

The actual planting usually lasts only 1 to 2 days—with helping hands from employees and the local community. In this short time, a space is transformed into a vibrant place for people, animals, and plants.

An initial budget of around CHF 25,000 should be planned for trees and soil preparation – coordination and additional work costs are extra.
Exact costs vary depending on the location and project scope.

🌱 Funding opportunities help ease the financial burden
🌱 Volunteer involvement reduces effort and costs
🌱 Every bit of support brings the forest one step closer!

Maintenance during the first few years is crucial to ensure healthy growth – this requires time and support from the community.

Our Experience

On November 10, 2023, we planted the first Tiny Forest on a company site in Zurich at the Hagenholz area of Entsorgung + Recycling Zürich (ERZ).
Using the Miyawaki method, we planted 600 native species over an area of 200 m². This project enhances biodiversity, promotes climate resilience, and demonstrates how companies can actively contribute to sustainable urban development.

engageability and the GIB Foundation initiated the project in 2021 as part of the “Für Züri” competition. Partners such as Grün Stadt Zürich and ZHAW provide long-term support and monitor its ecological impact.
