Focused Reporting

Based on our many years of experience in supporting and analysing sustainability reporting, and on the development of the Focused Reporting methodology for analysing sustainability reports, we are able to support companies in communicating their sustainability commitment clearly and in a focused manner, as well as supporting boards of directors in fulfilling their responsibility to approve such reports.

Why Focused Reporting?

The systematic analysis of sustainability reports through Focused Reporting offers companies clear strategic value: it creates transparency regarding the quality, relevance, and credibility of their sustainability communication. This makes it possible to strategically align sustainability engagement, make it measurable, and further develop it effectively.

At the same time, the analysis supports boards of directors in fulfilling their growing responsibility in the area of non-financial reporting. In light of increasing regulatory requirements – such as OR964 or the EU CSRD – sound and objective assessments are becoming increasingly important. Focused Reporting provides an independent basis for fact-based review, validation, and targeted further development of sustainability reports.

Methodology

Focused Reporting was launched in 2015. The project was also supported by a high-level consortium of multi-stakeholder experts, the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). The primary objective of Focused Reporting is to promote comprehensive sustainability reporting with impact-oriented objectives and a focus on relevant sustainability topics.

The methodology evaluates sustainability reporting based on the following topics:

Completeness

The completeness of the sustainability reports was assessed using the following criteria:

  • Principles
  • Content
  • Effectiveness

Impact Orientation

Impact orientation was assessed using the following criteria:

  • Transparency
  • Impact orientation
  • Material topics

Relevance

The relevance of topics was assessed using the following criteria:

  • Company-specific issues
  • Industry topics
  • International topics

Our offer

The sustainability report is analysed according to the Focused Reporting methodology, and the results are accessible via a dashboard.

The analysis of the sustainability report is supplemented with detailed information on best practices and areas for improvement.

Based on the results, a deep-dive workshop is offered in which individual topics are developed and measures to improve engagement and reporting are defined.

Peer benchmarks are offered to analyse and compare the sustainability reports of peers.
