I had the privilege of representing Innovate 4 Nature at COP16 Colombia in October 2024, and at COP16Riyadh in Saudi Arabia (November 2024). The takeaways are a wake-up call:
👉 The 30% challenge
In Cali, the goal was simple: stop deforestation and protect biodiversity. The Global Biodiversity Framework plans to restore and conserve 30% of the world’s land and oceans by 2030. It’s ambitious, but it’s necessary.
👉 From degraded to thriving
In Riyadh, desertification and drought were front and center. The challenges are different, but the urgency is the same. Degraded ecosystems aren’t a lost cause. With the right solutions, we can restore them.
👉 Mother nature knows best
Colombia’s rainforests and Saudi Arabia’s deserts are worlds apart, yet both are embracing nature-based solutions by tailoring them to their unique challenges.
👉 Indigenous voices at the center
Indigenous communities have been protecting nature long before modern conservation became a concept. We cannot succeed without their wisdom.
👉 The clock is ticking
Governments, businesses, and individuals — every actor must step up to protect the planet. We need strong regulations that protect nature, and harmful subsidies must become a thing of the past.
The biodiversity crisis is global, but the solutions must be local. Now it’s time to act! My New Year’s resolution is to scale and accelerate nature-positive solutions. Join me and Innovate 4 Nature at the SDG Tent in Davos on January 21 to discuss how we can make this happen!
