7 Key Insights at Symposium on Nature-based Solutions (NbS)

I recently got back from the Symposium on Nature-based Solutions (NbS) at Land Day during COP16Riyadh, and it left me feeling hopeful. Here are the 7 key insights that stood out:

Integrate NbS into strategies: Experts and policymakers emphasized the importance of embedding nature-based solutions into both corporate and national plans. This is essential for addressing environmental challenges effectively.
Secure the funding needed: A major focus was on ensuring NbS initiatives receive the necessary financial support. Without adequate funding, even the best ideas can’t move forward.
Address growing problems head-on: We tackled pressing issues like desertification and water scarcity. These challenges are accelerating, and immediate action is required to manage their impacts.
Tailor solutions to local needs: No two regions are the same. Solutions must be customized to address specific local challenges to be truly effective.
Plan for temperature increases: Our strategies need to remain effective even if global temperatures rise to 1.5°C or 2°C. It’s vital to account for these changes in our planning.
Protect soil health: Soil health is vital but often overlooked. Healthy soil acts as a natural filter, cleaning our water and keeping pollutants out of our rivers and lakes. We need to prioritize soil protection.
Use existing solutions: We already have the solutions – no need to reinvent the wheel. The real challenge is putting what we know into action through collaboration among governments, businesses, and communities.
